"PUGAY! I received your book today, thank you very much GM Professor Ireneo L Olavides for bringing this traditional Filipino fighting system of Eskrima de Campo JDC-IO to the public worldwide through your first book "OUT OF THE SHADOWS: History, Philosophy and Basic Techniques". As a serious FMA practitioner since the 90's, I've read a lot of books and articles about different FMA systems. This is an addition to my FMA book collection. Mabuhay ang arnis! Mabuhay po kayo!"

"I am truly looking forward to finishing this book. Thus far it has been amazing. I have always heard great things about Manong Eric thru David Gould, student of the late PG Edgar Sulite. I appreciate and respect the author's viewpoints on being a low profile selective group."

"In October 2019 as part of a trip to the Philippines, my Pekiti Tirsia Kali instructor Thomas Müller had arranged for a visit to Manong Eric Olavides, founder of the Eskrima De Campo J.D.C. – I.O. system. I remember Thomas, Stefan and I talked to Manong Eric Olavides about Eskrima de Campo, but also about life in general and principles in life in a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere. It was here that I decided to get myself the book “Out of the Shadows”, so that I could get more information about Eskrima De Campo J.D.C. – I.O. I enjoyed reading the book, which provides a comprehensive insight into Manong Eric Olavides' martial arts career and the art of Eskrima de Campo J.D.C. – I.O. I liked the chapter about the “Mindset of a Martial Artist” and the demonstrations of the basic techniques and movements of the art. Being a secondary school teacher I especially appreciated the quotation of a Latin proverb in connection with “learning” and “teaching” and the quotation from Grandmaster Eric Olavides: “The teacher is always a student of the art that he or she is teaching.” It´s true to say that even though you are a teacher by status, which you have achieved by learning, you keep on learning through the ones you teach. Let it be a good question to be asked by any student, or the student's own idea in coming up with the solution to a problem."

"When I heard about the publication of Eric Olavides' book "OUT OF THE SHADOWS“ I immediately ordered some copies. I gave them also to some friends. From my teacher and friend Uli Weidle, I heard some stories about "De Campo 123" and his training with Manong Eric. He also introduced me to him at his house near Manila. The book offers a good description of Eric Olavides’ system, ESKRIMA DE CAMPO J.D.C. - I.O., about his teachers, mindset and some basic techniques. The techniques are shown in pictures but some are also linked to videos. I like the peaceful mindset of the DE CAMPO people as shown in the book, and that the style is kept together in a methodical way and easily identifiable. Last winter I followed the pictures and information in the book to train the postures and sequences. Of course, this is basic training, an introduction to the system. I hope to learn and understand more about it and also about the applications and partner exercises. I hope that in his second book, there will be more information about the system."

“This book is a must-have for every lover and practitioner of Filipino Martial Arts. In addition to exciting reports and anecdotes about the learning path and the teachers of Prof. Eric Olavides, a technical section offers insights into the personal style of this widely respected teacher. I'm really looking forward to the second book."

"I firmly support Prof. Ireneo (Manong Eric) L. Olavides' essence of teaching--that Eskrima De Campo is to be taught and promoted only in a traditional way, rather than the commercial method. I've heard the same from my father PPZ who once said that Eskrima De Campo shall be taught only to selected individuals, as what the founder Jose Diaz Caballero exactly told him during his De Campo Orihinal lessons in 1957 to 1960. Congrats Nong Eric for the success of your 1st published book, OUT OF THE SHADOWS!"

"...currently I’m trying to learn as much as I can from the (book). Everybody in our club has been reading (it) and enjoying it. Once again thanks for that. I’m too “young” to express opinions regarding the book, I just enjoy it and at times I re-read it to try to uncover layers and try to find new meaning between the words. I hope, in the future book, to find more about Caballero, the De Campo system and the story, vision and experience of Manong Eric Olavides. Anyway, I cannot thank you enough for the book!"

"For me personally, I'm interested in De Campo because of how successful it has been in fighting. I teach a kali class here in the United States at an MMA gym, so practicality and effectiveness is a big deal. I have read that De Campo really improved people's sparring who have learned it, and historically it has also done very well in actual matches. But I don't know anything about it, so I'm really curious to discover the "magic" that I hear is there."

"Professor Ireneo L. Olavides succinctly and eloquently brings Eskrima De Campo "Out of the Shadows" of Cebu into the forefront in his first book. As a FMA practitioner since 1985, I always welcome insights from our respected FMA elders. Truly a welcome addition to my library. I am looking forward to the sequel. Mabuhay ang De Campo!"

"'Out of the Shadows' by Professor Ireneo Olavides is an outstanding piece not just because it's about his legendary (system) but (about the) almost secret development, until now, of Caballero's De Campo 123 Orihinal. It's also a great book because it shows how eskrima should be taught; it's possible to perceive between (the) lines the passion and commitment (that went) with it. Highly recommended, I hope it leads to a second part soon."
